H1N1: What You Can Do |
|
|
| This Mother's Day Think Fitness for the Whole Body |
| |
One way to show your mother how much you care is by supporting ways that she can take care of her whole body. Instead of a calorie heavy gift or meal out, try giving a gift certificate for a yoga class or special massage.
Yoga is an ancient system of personal development encompassing mind, body and spirit. It is now embraced by modern science and by millions of Americans. Yoga can benefit anybody, from babies to seniors, and can be adapted for any body, from pregnant women to hardcore athletes. Take a class and see why yoga is often called the fountain of life.

| Ten Tips for Low-Cost Gifts |
| |
The upcoming months will see several occasions that may require gift giving. When money is tight there are some alternatives to purchasing gifts. Here are a few to get you started:
- Have a white elephant gift exchange—someone will treasure the item you don’t want.
- Grow plants from seeds or cuttings.
- Give a special treasure you have to someone else to cherish, then eventually they can pass it on to someone else.
- Take pictures and create a photo album of special times.
- Make gifts—a gift certificate sharing your time or your talents is always appreciated. Window washing, babysitting, lawn mowing and garden weeding are all examples of jobs a relative/friend would appreciate.
- Give a little girl a dress-up box of your old clothes, jewelry and hats.
- Encourage a budding artist with a decorated box of art supplies or supplies to make puppets and masks.
- Fill an inexpensive basket with loaves of freshly baked bread or bake special treats and include the recipe. Cookies, quick breads, cakes, and pies make wonderful gifts.
Remember that gifts do not always have to mean an expensive purchase. For more information, call Buncombe County Cooperative Extension at 255-5522. |

| Tent Caterpillars |
| |
Eastern tent caterpillars are back for their annual visit. By now you may be seeing the webbed “tents” in the branch angles of trees such as cherries, plums and crabapples.
The good news is that although they are unsightly and the caterpillars can eat a lot of leaves, they are generally not damaging enough to worry about. If you have a small tree in which the tent is within reach with a long pole, just tear down the nest. If the nest is out of reach, just let it be. The caterpillars will be gone within a few weeks and the trees will put out some new leaves.
