Human Services Satellite Office Opens Soon

Buncombe County is pleased to announce that it will open its first Human Services satellite office in the Leicester community on October 5.

Lt. Irvin Robinson of the Henderson Police Department reports that four elderly residents of Vance County were victimized the week of September 14th by criminals running a variation of the so-called grandparent scam.

October is Adopt-A-Dog Month! Celebrate by entering your favorite
candid canine in the Asheville Humane Society's Pet Photo Contest!

For all the reasons we love our dogs - and especially the dogs available for adoption at the Asheville Humane Society shelter - AHS is hosting an annual pet photo contest to celebrate DOGS. They're seeking the next top dog model to serve as spokesdog for 2010 Adopt-A-Dog month.

Think your canine cutie has what it takes to steal hearts and stop traffic?

Then enter the pet photo contest. Submission deadline is by 5 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2009.

United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) is aware of public reports of malicious code circulating via spam email messages related to the IRS. The attacks arrive via an unsolicited email message and may contain a subject line of "Notice of Underreported Income." These messages may contain a link or attachment. If users click on this link or open the attachment, they may be infected with malicious code, including the Zeus Trojan.

US-CERT encourages users and administrators to take the following measures to protect themselves:

• Review the How to Report and Identify Phishing, E-mail Scams and Bogus IRS Web Sites document on the IRS website.
• Do not follow unsolicited web links or attachments in email messages.
• Maintain up-to-date antivirus software.
• Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document for more information on avoiding email scams.
