Healthy Tip - Family Meals Give Us More Than Just Healthier Eating!

It is known that families who eat meals together eat healthier, but the family meal has also been linked to other benefits. The University of Minnesota conducted a study and program called Project EAT (EatingEat Smart, Move More Among Teens). They studied and worked with adolescents and their families. What they found out was that the adolescents who ate seven or more meals with their families per week had higher grade-point averages and were more adjusted than the adolescents who ate two or fewer meals with their families per week. Youth eating more often with their family were less likely to feel depressed or suicidal, to smoke cigarettes or use alcohol or marijuana. Young people, especially girls, who ate more meals with their families were also less likely to have disordered eating such as binge eating and extreme weight-loss diets.

Our lives have become hectic with all the activities and work responsibilities that our families have, but it is important to take the time to socialize and share during healthy family meals. It doesn’t have to be a big meal; benefits such as those found by Project EAT are gained even if we are just sitting down to sandwiches and pre-prepared salads.

September 21 is “Family Table Night” -- join other families in making an effort to eat together that day. For more information on planning meals at home call Cathy Hohenstein at 255-5522 or go to http://www.myeatsmartmovemore.com/ and for more information about Project EAT go to http://www.epi.umn.edu/research/eat/.

Watch Out for Thefts Like These

  • "Shoulder surfing:" a thief watching from a nearby location as you punch in a debit card PIN or telephone calling card number or listen in while you give your credit card number over the phone.
  • Use the camera in a cell phone to photograph someone's credit card or ATM card while he or she is using an ATM machine or buying something in a store.
  • Fraudulent spam emails that promise huge prizes or bargains in return for personal and financial information.
  • "Skimming:"  A dishonest merchant secretly copies the magnetic strip on the back of your credit card or debit card in order to make a counterfeit card that can be sold.
